These are the tires on his X5 and that is a dime. There is less tread on the wheel than there is the distance between the top of the head and the tire. He also won't listen to me when I say replace the tires with ones that aren't run flats.

No no no. As a modern BMW owner I'm obligated to tell you runflats suck. I switched to non runflats maybe ~500 miles ago and it's been wonderful.

I want him to buy ones that aren't run flats. My wording is confusing. I'll fix it

He might be right. It depends on what tires the car uses... I have goodyear eagle F1 Supercar on my Corvette... If you do the dime test on them, they are sold brand new with no life left lol.
You have to use the tire markers to see how much life this particular tire has. It's not the 70s anymore... The dime test is not something valid we can keep using.

Is he one of the elderly that firmly believe that tires don't need replaced until one blows?

The wear marks are almost completely gone...

Ohhh okay my bad.
You have the right idea. RFT suck. My car is smoother, much more quiet, and still cheaper than the RFT. The tread rating is over 500 and has a 50k warranty. Conti extremecontact DWS. Good in snow apparently.
Edit: the grip is also fucking awesome

the wear indicator tells a different story, though they do look worn

Then it's time to change the tires :)
But you should have taken pics of the wear markers inistead of the dime as the dime does not mean much ;)

This is the best tire. The passenger side one has the wear indicators almost completely gone.

If this is the wear marker though, it means the tire is still good as it did not reach it yet.
Sport tires have almost no wear markers and can go way "low" on thread compared to normal tires...

Just tell him "they're run-flats, not run-slicks".

yes

I can pick which car is owned by the elderly just by the tires in a parking lot. It's scary what they can get away with without inspections.

honestly, what came to my mind is, if you love him enough, and he has enough cash yet is still too hardheaded to replace them... Give him a reason to do so now by taking a knife to one, or two of them (or all four)... Then he'll have to replace them for a safer/newer set.
It sounds bad, I know, but it's honestly what came to mind as I read this.

Take a knife and slash his tires! Force him to get new. Honestly that's so dangerous!

Just don't tell him you did it (or you can too, just be prepared to explain why you did so out of love and concern).

Ive never tried some, how does it drive? can you describe?

Funny, I said the exact same thing as you at the same time.

Being a former service adviser, I can tell you that 99% of the general driving populace can get another year of of these tires, because you know, they drive just fine and hold air.

here's an initial review a I did when I first got them. Lemme know if you have any more questions!

Had those tires on my Acura TL; very pleased with them. wore nicely and had plenty of grip for normal driving in all seasons. I live in the Northeast, we have ALL the seasons.

I'm up in VA so we get decently tough winters too, how'd these hold up in deeper snow? I know these do fine in a couple inches.

Not bad at all. Not quite dedicated snow tires levels of good, but they drove through feet of snow just fine. I had no trouble getting out of the driveway every morning.

That's great to hear. Now that I've broken them in they got even quieter. Still haven't had any issues with them.

They were on the short list to put on my new TDI wagon, but I went with a dedicated snow and a more summer oriented allseason for the warm months. Hankook Ventus S1 Noble 2. I'd absolutely recommend the DWS to anyone though. Especially if you are not getting a set of dedicated snow tires. Good grip in ALL conditions.
